The Girl From Salonika an award winning documentary follows Mazaltov “Fofo” Behar, a 17-year-old Greek Jewish girl deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau and victim of Nazi doctor Horst Schumann’s sterilisation experiments at the notorious Block 10. With rare interior footage and Fofo’s testimony, the film lays bare war time atrocities there and the ‘grey’ role of prisoner-doctor Maximilian Samuel and nurse Fela, whose intervention ultimately saved Fofo’s life. Through her son David and grandson Carlos, a psychologist who travels to Auschwitz, the film tracks the long reach of her trauma across generations. Expert analysis of Nazi ‘medicine’ shows how easily medical ethics collapse when doctors submit to political or ideological demands.
